SAFETY RECALL 23TA14 (Remedy Notice)
Certain 2023 Model Year Supra
Loss Of Motive Power
On December 6, 2023, BMW filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informing the agency of their intent to conduct a voluntary Safety Recall on certain 2023 model year GR Supra vehicles.
Condition
The subject vehicles were manufactured by BMW. According to BMW
, the Integrated Transmission Control Unit (ITCU) may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. A weld seam may not have been manufactured correctly. Over time, this could allow transmission oil to leak into the ITCU which could affect functionality of the transmission. Transmission seizure at high speed could affect vehicle handling and control and increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Any authorized Toyota dealer will replace the transmission valve body, which contains a new integrated transmission control unit (ITCU), FREE OF CHARGE.
Covered Vehicles
There are approximately 20 vehicles covered by this Safety Recall. No vehicles covered by this Safety Recall were distributed to Puerto Rico.
Owner Letter Mailing Date
Toyota will begin to notify owners by early February 2024.
Toyota makes significant effort to obtain current customer name and address information from each state through industry resources when mailing owner letters. In the event your dealership receives a notice for a vehicle that was sold prior to the Safety Recall announcement, it is the dealership’s responsibility to forward the owner letter to the customer who purchased the vehicle.
Salvage Title Vehicles
Every attempt should be made to complete an open Safety Recall when circumstances permit, unless noted otherwise in the Safety Recall dealer letter.
For complete details on this policy, refer to Toyota Warranty Policy 4.17, “What Is Not Covered by The Toyota

Chronology :
On July 13, 2023, BMW became aware of a possible issue involving the Integrated Transmission Control Unit (ITCU) from its supplier. The supplier indicated that during certain quality assurance tests, some parts became suspect. As a result, additional parts which had successfully completed the tests and that had been retained, were then subject to further testing and analyses, including photo-microscopy. The micrographs indicated that some portion of the welding seams may have been suspect. Additional testing, involving shaker tests to simulate long term durability, were performed.
Between August and September, further in-depth reviews of the information and data provided by the supplier were conducted. This led to further requests for additional information and data from the supplier involving production process testing details, production lot information, and scope parameters.
In October and November, further evaluations were conducted, including failure modes and affects analyses. Information from the field was reviewed to determine if any vehicles had experienced the issue.
Vehicle assembly information and supplier production and process records were reviewed to determine the number, and production dates, of potentially affected vehicles.
On November 29, 2023, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
During its analyses, BMW was not aware of any customer complaints, warranty claims, or field reports that may be related to this issue and, similarly, Toyota
was not aware of any non-dealer field reports or warranty claims that may be related to this issue.
BMW and Toyota
have not received any reports, nor are BMW
and Toyota
otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.

Original Publication Date: December 6, 2023 Q1: What is the condition?
A1: The subject vehicles were manufactured by BMW. According to BMW, the Integrated Transmission Control Unit (ITCU) may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier. A weld seam may not have been manufactured correctly. Over time, this could allow transmission oil to leak into the ITCU which could affect functionality of the transmission. If the function and operation of the transmission was affected, this could lead to a seizure of the transmission gears. Transmission seizure at high speed could affect vehicle handling and control and increase the risk of a crash. Q1a: Are there any warnings that this condition exists?
A1a: No. There are no warnings that this condition exists. Q2: What is Toyota going to do?
A2: Toyota will send an owner notification by first class mail starting in early-February 2024, advising owners to make an appointment with their authorized Toyota dealer to replace the transmission valve body, which contains a new integrated transmission control unit (ITCU), FREE OF CHARGE. NOTE (Customers who live in the state of California)
The state of California requires the completion of Safety Recalls / Service Campaigns on emission related parts prior to vehicle registration renewal. In addition, the State requires that every vehicle must pass an emission test (SMOG Check) every two years and before it is sold. Without the completion of this FREE Safety Recall, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will not allow your vehicle to be registered. State of California Regulations require Toyota to provide the Department of Motor Vehicles with a record of all vehicles that have not had the Safety Recall completed. Your Toyota dealer will provide you with a Vehicle Emissions Recall Proof of Correction Form after the campaign has been completed. Please ensure you retain this form, because the DMV may require that you supply proof that the campaign has been completed during your vehicle registration renewal process. FAQ Page 1 of 2

As a result, this could allow automatic transmission oil to leak into the transmission control unit which could then contact electronic components. If this happened, it could affect the operation of the clutch pressure control valves.

Country : Germany Chronology :
During its analyses, BMW was not aware of any customer complaints, warranty claims, or field reports that may be related to this issue and, similarly, Toyota was not aware of any non-dealer field reports or warranty claims that may be related to this issue. BMW and Toyota have not received any reports, nor are BMW and Toyota otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries that may be related to this issue.
