TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR 22TA01 REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMPS MAY BECOME DIM OR DEACTIVATED CERTAIN 2021 VENZA HYBRID The repair quality of covered vehicles is extremely important to Toyota. All dealership technicians performing this Recall are required to successfully complete the most current version of the E-Learning course “Safety Recall and Service Campaign Essentials”. To ensure that all vehicles have the repair performed correctly; technicians performing this repair are required to currently have completed all of the following courses: • T623 – Toyota Electrical Circuit Diagnosis It is the dealership’s responsibility to select technicians with the above certification level or greater to perform this Recall repair. Carefully review your resources, the technician skill level, and ability before assigning technicians to this repair. It is important to consider technician days off and vacation schedules to ensure there are properly trained technicians available to perform this repair at all times. 2 OPERATION FLOW CHART No further action required. Not Covered Verify Vehicle Eligibility 1. Confirm vehicle VIN matches the RO. 2. Check TIS Vehicle Inquiry or Service Lane Vehicle One-View for Campaign eligibility. Remove rear bumper assembly. Replace parts based on TIS Vehicle Inquiry or Service Lane Vehicle One-View “Memo” field. Replace rear turn signal light lens and body and rear turn signal light LED. Install rear bumper assembly. Campaign completed, return the vehicle to the customer. LED Kit + Lens and Body Kit Covered Replace rear turn signal light LED. Install ECU-B No. 2 fuse. LED Kit Only Remove ECU-B No. 2 fuse. COMPONENTS 7 REMOVE REAR BUMPER ASSEMBLY • DO NOT turn the IG ON/OFF or operate the power back door control switch during work, since the cable is not disconnected from the negative auxiliary battery terminal. • The inspection and adjustment of the ultrasonic sensors are unnecessary since the rear bumper only needs to be removed/installed. 1. CHECK FOR DTC’S a. Using a Techstream, perform a Health Check to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). When DTCs are displayed, check and record the codes and the freeze frame data for future reference. NOTE: This Campaign covers only the rear turn signal lens & body and/or socket LEDs, as detailed in these instructions. It does not cover the diagnosis or replacement of any other systems on the vehicle. 2. RECORD CUSTOMIZED ITEMS a. The customized items will be initialized by removing the ECU-B No.2 fuse. Operate the multi-information display of the combination meter to check and record the current settings before starting work. OPEN BACK DOOR a. Open the back door before starting work as the operation of the hands free power back door will be stopped by removing a fuse. 4. WEAR PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT • Make sure to wear protective gloves to protect hands from injury. • Wear protective glasses to protect eyes from foreign matter when working under the vehicle. 8 5. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH a. Disengage the 2 claws and guide as shown in the illustration. b. Disengage the 6 claws and guide as shown in the illustration to remove the front door scuff plate LH. c. w/ Illumination: i. Disconnect the connector. 6. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH a. Remove the clip. b. Disengage the clip to remove the cowl side trim board LH as shown in the illustration. 7. REMOVE ECU-B NO.2 FUSE (w/ Hands Free Power Back Door) a. Remove No.1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly. i. Confirm IG OFF. ii. Remove the 3 screws. iii. Pull the No.1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly in the direction indicated by the arrow (1) to disengage the 3 claws. iv. Pull the No.1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly in the direction indicated by the arrow (2) to disengage the guide. v. Disengage the 2 claws to disconnect the DLC3. vi. Disconnect the connector and disengage the clamp to remove the No.1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly. Remove the ECU-B No.2 fuse to stop the operation of the hands free power back door, since un expected movement of the power back door may cause someone being caught by accident. 9 b. Remove the ECU-B No.2 fuse (10A) from the power distribution box assembly. 8. REMOVE REAR COMBINATION LIGHT COVER a. Using a molding remover, disengage the 4 claws as shown in the illustration to remove the rear combination light cover LH. b. Use the same procedure for the other side. 9. APPLY PROTECTIVE TAPE a. Apply protective (painter’s) tape around the rear bumper assembly as shown in the illustration. 10. REMOVE REAR BUMPER ASSEMBLY a. Remove the 6 clips under the vehicle. Molding remover 10 b. Disconnect the 2 connectors. c. Apply tape on the disconnected connectors to protect them from foreign matter or water. d. Remove the 2 rear bumper upper stoppers (screw and grommet). e. Remove the 2 screws. f. Remove the 2 clips from the left and right wheel house side (one clip on each side). 11 g. Disengage the 14 claws shown in the illustration so the rear bumper assembly is lifted up. Note: To protect the rear bumper assembly from breakage, push the area around the claws from the back side by inserting your hand from the gap between the rear bumper assembly and vehicle body. h. With another worker disengage the 6 claws and 4 guides as shown in the illustration to remove the rear bumper assembly. Work on the removed rear bumper assembly placing it on a soft cloth to avoid scratch. 12 USE TIS OR SERVICE LANE TO DETERMINE REPLACEMENT PARTS Make sure to check each VIN in TIS or Service Lane, since the replacement parts differ depending on the VIN. 1. DETERMINE WHICH PARTS NEED TO BE REPLACED a. Refer to the parts information you found in the Vehicle Inquiry or Vehicle One-View “Memo” field in step II. IDENTIFICATION OF AFFECTED VEHICLES AND PARTS. LED Kit + Lens and Body Kit: LED Kit ONLY: 13 REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LENS AND BODY AND REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LED REPLACEMENT Make sure to check each VIN in TIS or Service Lane, since the replacement parts differ depending on the VIN. Not all vehicles require Lens and Body replacement. 1. REMOVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT ASSEMBLY a. Mark the rear turn signal light assemblies. b. Disengage the clamps (3 clamps on the LH side/ 2 clamps on the RH side). c. Disconnect 2 connectors on each side and disconnect the luggage room wire. d. Remove the 3 screws. e. Disengage the claw and 6 guides to remove the rear turn signal light assembly. f. Use the same procedure for the other side. Which parts need to be replaced? Which parts need to be replaced? REMOVE BACK-UP LIGHT LED a. Remove the back-up light LED. b. Store the rear turn signal light LED and the rear turn signal light lens and body from which the back-up light LED is removed. • Store the removed back-up light LED so they can be reused. • DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the removed back-up light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. 3. INSTALL BACK-UP LIGHT LED a. Install the back-up light LED to the NEW rear turn signal light lens and body aligning the grooves. • DO NOT turn the LED forcibly when installing it. • DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the back-up light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. CRITICAL TIP DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the removed back-up light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. CRITICAL TIP DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the removed back-up light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. 15 b. Confirm that the connector of the back-up light LED is horizontal. Make sure that the connector of the back-up light LED is horizontal to prevent the connector from falling off. 4. INSTALL NEW REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LED a. After confirming the color of the printed circuit board is white, install the NEW rear turn signal light LED to the rear turn signal light lens and body aligning the grooves. Note: The new rear turn signal light LED cannot be installed to the rear turn signal light lens and body (w/o cover) due to the difference of shape. • DO NOT turn the LED forcibly when installing it. • DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the new rear turn signal light LED. b. Confirm that the connector of the rear turn signal light LED is horizontal. c. Use the same procedure for the other side. Make sure that the connector of the rear turn signal light LED is horizontal to prevent the connector from falling off. CRITICAL TIP DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the new rear turn signal light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. 16 5. INSTALL REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT ASSEMBLY a. Engage the 6 guides and claw. b. Install the rear turn signal light assembly to the rear bumper with the 3 screws. c. Use the same procedure for the other side. d. Connect the 2 connectors (each side). e. Engage the clamps (3 clamps on the LH side/ 2 clamps on the RH side) to install the luggage room wire. Proceed to section X. REAR BUMPER INSTALLATION 17 REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LED REPLACEMENT 1. REMOVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LED a. Disconnect the connector shown in the illustration. b. Remove the rear turn signal light LED. c. Use the same procedure for the other side. DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the removed rear turn signal light LED. d. Mark the removed rear turn signal light LED and store it in a separate container. 2. INSTALL NEW REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT LED CRITICAL TIP DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the new rear turn signal light LED, since static electricity may damage the LED. 18 a. After confirming the color of the printed circuit board is white, install the NEW rear turn signal light LED to the rear turn signal light lens and body aligning the grooves. • DO NOT turn the LED forcibly when installing it. • DO NOT touch the printed circuit board of the new rear turn signal light LED. b. Confirm that the connector of the rear turn signal light LED is horizontal. c. Use the same procedure for the other side. Make sure that the connector of the rear turn signal light LED is horizontal to prevent the connector from falling off. d. Connect the connector. REAR BUMPER INSTALLATION It is unnecessary to inspect/adjust ultrasonic sensor. Please ignore this caution label. 19 1. INSTALL REAR BUMPER ASSEMBLY a. After confirming that the parts on LH side and RH side are replaced with the new ones, engage the 4 guides and 6 claws and install the rear bumper assembly with another worker. Be careful not to let the harness on the back side of the rear bumper to get caught. b. Engage the 14 claws shown in the illustration. c. Install the 2 clips from the left and right wheel house side (one clip on each side). d. Install the 2 screws. 20 e. Install the 2 rear bumper stoppers (screw and grommet). f. Connect the 2 connectors. g. Install the 6 clips under the vehicle. 2. REMOVE PROTECTIVE TAPE a. Remove protective tape and clean the surface. 3. INSTALL REAR COMBINATION LIGHT COVER a. Engage the 4 claws and install the rear combination light cover LH. b. Use the same procedure for the other side. 21 4. INSTALL ECU-B NO.2 FUSE a. Install the ECU-B No.2 fuse to the power distribution box assembly. Note: Ensure you install the fuse at the correct position. b. Engage the clamp and connect the connector. c. Engage the 2 claws to connect the DLC3. d. Engage the guide and 3 claws as shown in the illustration. e. Install the No.1 instrument panel under cover sub-assembly with the 3 screws. 5. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH a. Engage the clip as shown in the illustration. b. Install the cowl side trim board LH with the clip. 6. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH a. w/ Illumination: i. Connect the connector. b. Engage the 2 guides and 8 claws to install the front door scuff plate LH. 22 7. POWER BACK DOOR SYSTEM INITIALIZATION a. Fully close the back door by hand. 8. CHECK FOR DTCs 9. REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT ASSEMBLY OPERATION CHECK a. INSPECT REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT b. INSPECT BACK-UP LIGHT c. INSPECT TOYOTA PARKING ASSIST-SENSOR SYSTEM 10. CHECK HANDS FREE POWER BACK DOOR OPERATION a. With the ignition switch off and the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly being carried, check that the power back door operates when a kick operation is performed within 100 mm (3.94 in.) of the rear bumper surface. 11. RESTORE CUSTOMIZED ITEMS a.
