A ball joint failure may cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22E002
Manufacturer Tenneco Automotive
Components SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 6,478
Summary
Tenneco Automotive (DRiV) is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints for 2004-2007 Toyota Sequoia and 2004-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles, MOOG part number K80521, K80522, NAPA part number NCP2601633, NCP2601634, ACDelco part number 45D2344, and 45D2345. DRiV will work with distributors to return unsold parts. Dealers will inspect and replace the ball joint as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 17, 2022. Owners may contact DRiV customer service at 1-877-489-6659 or at RECALL.SUPPORT@DRIV.COM.

Chronology :
July 27, 2021: DRiV’s labor claim team received a report of a field failure of a lower ball joint. No accident or injury was reported.
August 2, 2021 – September 2, 2021: DRiV analyzed the returned (failed) part and three additional parts (one used part from the field and two new parts from inventory), including internal laboratory tests for stud surface hardness, core hardness and case depth; and for housing surface hardness, core hardness and case depth. DRiV shared the test results with the supplier and tried to engage the supplier to jointly investigate the issue. Parts were placed on internal quality hold on September 2.
September 2 – November 30, 2021: Supplier and DRiV undertook parallel investigations. DRiV’s investigation included third-party laboratory testing of 40 samples from various lot codes, focusing on housing surface hardness, core hardness and case depth. A Product Notice was issued to customers (11/22/2021), a copy of which was submitted to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR 579.5. Supplier tested additional samples with conflicting results.
December 2, 2021 – December 31, 2021: DRiV undertook additional testing, using three independent labs, of 240 sample parts from various production codes. These tests indicated that some parts manufactured during the production date range identified herein had inadequate induction hardening (although the supplier does not agree with these findings). The issue was escalated to DRiV’s Global Warranty Committee.
January 9, 2022: The Global Warranty Committee approved this safety recall.
There are no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
RECALL NO. 22E002
March 2022
Dear Valued MOOG Distributor/Dealer:
We are writing to inform you that Federal Mogul Motorparts LLC (DRiV) is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain MOOG brand lower ball joints, Part No. K80521 (right) and K80522 (left). Our records indicate that recalled products were shipped to you.
What Products are Involved?
This recall involves the following products manufactured during the stated production period:
MOOG Part Number
Vehicle Application
Affected Production Range
K80521 (right)
K80522 (left)
MY 2004 – 2007 Toyota Sequoia and
MY 2004 – 2006 Toyota Tundra
4/1/2020 through 4/29/2021
DRiV previously requested return of your inventory of these part numbers per the enclosed “Product Notice.”
What is the Problem?
The ball joint housing in some of these parts may have inadequate induction hardening, which may lead to accelerated wear and premature failure. Failure of a ball joint while the vehicle is in motion may cause loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Note: As the ball joint approaches end of durability, the driver may hear noise and notice wandering in the steering. If axial looseness is measured during scheduled maintenance, it will exceed specification.
What should you do?
(a) Product Remaining in Your Inventory: If any Part No. K80521 or K80522 remain in your inventory, you should return them to DRiV per the attached “Product Notice” for credit. Replacement parts are currently under development. When available, replacement parts will have new part numbers. Note: It is a violation of federal law to sell the recalled products.
(b) Products You Sold to Other Resellers: If you sold the recalled ball joints to reselling customers, you must forward a copy of this letter and enclosed “Owner Letter” to them within five (5) business days of receipt. Recalled products should be returned to you, as the original point of purchase, for a refund or to receive a replacement ball joint..
(c) Products You Installed or Sold to Consumers: You must immediately check your sale records to identify any consumers to whom you sold Part No. K80521 or K80522 after May 1, 2021 and send them a copy of the enclosed NHTSA-approved Owner Letter. Alternatively, you can email your customers’ contact information to DRiV at RECALL.SUPPORT@DRIV.COM and we will contact them directly. When contacted by the consumer, please do the following: (1) Confirm that the product is covered by the recall per the enclosed “Inspection Procedure”; (2) If covered, the ball joint should be replaced at no cost to the customer (parts and labor); and (3) Submit a claim under the DRiV warranty claims process. (We will reimburse 0.4 hours labor for inspection and 2.5 hours labor per replacement ball joint.)
If you have any questions, please contact DRiV Customer Service at 877-489-6659 or RECALL.SUPPORT@DRIV.COM. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are taking this action in the interest of our customers’ personal safety and satisfaction with our products.

Chronology :
July 27, 2021: DRiV’s labor claim team received a report of a field failure of a lower ball joint. No accident or
injury was reported.
August 2, 2021 – September 2, 2021: DRiV analyzed the returned (failed) part and three additional parts (one
used part from the field and two new parts from inventory), including internal laboratory tests for stud surface
hardness, core hardness and case depth; and for housing surface hardness, core hardness and case depth. DRiV
shared the test results with the supplier and tried to engage the supplier to jointly investigate the issue. Parts
were placed on internal quality hold on September 2.
September 2 – November 30, 2021: Supplier and DRiV undertook parallel investigations. DRiV’s investigation
included third-party laboratory testing of 40 samples from various lot codes, focusing on housing surface
hardness, core hardness and case depth. A Product Notice was issued to customers (11/22/2021), a copy of
which was submitted to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR 579.5. Supplier tested additional samples with
conflicting results.
December 2, 2021 – December 31, 2021: DRiV undertook additional testing, using three independent labs, of
240 sample parts from various production codes. These tests indicated that some parts manufactured during
the production date range identified herein had inadequate induction hardening (although the supplier does
not agree with these findings). The issue was escalated to DRiV’s Global Warranty Committee.
January 9, 2022: The Global Warranty Committee approved this safety recall.
There are no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.
